Abbotsholme come to visit
Abbotsholme prove worthy opponents
At home to skilled visitors, the very gallant efforts of the Stone Fencing Club epee team proved lacking and we were narrowly beaten 9 – 7.
The score line did not do justice to the quality of the individual matches that were produced from the team line up: Ian (past Club Captain) Henry, Rob and Alison. Indeed, out of all of the matches there were only two which ended in a 4 to 2 result; all of the others were decided by a solitary point! Henry and Rob fenced extremely well, with Rob setting the team off with fine 4 – 3 victory over George from Abbotsholme. Henry picked up the baton and went on to take three hard fought 4 – 3 victories. Alison and Ian also produced victories and some excellent ‘personal bests’.
Credit where credit is due – the visitors (George, Greg, Jacob and Luke) were skilled in their approach and clearly focused on the task at hand. There certainly could be no denying the clear coaching skills they brought to the competition. Indeed the question raised must be …Who is their coach!!!????
On the positive side, however, we still remain unbeaten at any competition in all weapons, and this evening was no different with the foil team (Oliver, James, Hannah and Dave) proving far too strong for the visitors. The final score was 14 – 2.
Our current league champion, Dave, was his usual self and that was the incentive for the rest of the team to well and truly shine! The attacks and the parries by the home side were just outstanding, but for me the finest move of the evening was the coule so cleanly executed by Oliver in his victory over Nick for the visitors.
A special mention to Jon Goodwin and Andrew (Ken’s son) for presiding and a very special mention to the clubs youngest fencer, Adam, who very ably assisted with the time keeping in the foil competition
“The One That Got Away”
On a very light note, when the epee competition ended there was some time to spare, so in essence there was a ‘friendly’ within a ‘friendly’, with the visitors playing host to a fresh team of Paul, Henry, Rob and Martin. Sadly, we ran out of time and whilst I would be the first to accept that such a match could not in any way count to the overall competition results, I couldn’t help but notice that we were well in the lead when we had to stop!! Having said that…Three Cheers for Abbottsholme! We look forward to fencing them again!!
Our next competition is against the Harper Adams University. Ken will let us have the details shortly so please see the Club Captain Martin Brown if you want to compete.
Yours in Fencing
